Hell

*Click on the references to read the Scripture passages.*

We believe there will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. Whoever is not found written in the Book of Life, together with the devil and his angels, will be consigned to everlasting punishment in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone (Matthew 25:46Matthew 25:46

And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
; Mark 9:43-48Mark 9:43-48

If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— 44 where ‘Their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— 46 where ‘Their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire— 48 where ‘Their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’
; Revelation 19:20Revelation 19:20

Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.
).

Hell is a real place and is described as the place of eternal torment. It is also described as everlasting fire, everlasting punishment, “outer darkness,” everlasting destruction, and lake of fire (Matthew 25:41,46Matthew 25:41, 46

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
; Matthew 8:12Matthew 8:12

But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
; 2 Thessalonians 1:9II Thessalonians 1:9

These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power
; Revelation 19:20Revelation 19:20

Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.
). Hell is eternally separate from the place of the eternal dwelling of the blessed of God (Luke 16:19-31Luke 16:19-31

the story of the rich man and Lazarus
).

  • Hell was prepared for the devil, fallen angels, the wicked, the disobedient, rejectors of the gospel (Matthew 25:41Matthew 25:41

Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:
    ; Revelation 21:8Revelation 21:8

But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
    ; Psalm 9:17Psalm 9:17

The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.
    ; Romans 2:8-9Romans 2:8-9

    but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek;
    ; 2 Peter 2:4II Peter 2:4

    For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;
    ; Jude 6Jude 6

    And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;
    ; Matthew 10:28Matthew 10:28

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
    ).
  • Hell is the destination of those who refuse to turn from sin (Luke 13:25-27Luke 13:25-27

When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’ 26 then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ 27 But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’
    ; Galatians 5:19-21Galatians 5:19-21

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
    ).
  • Every man’s eternal destiny (heaven or hell) is determined on the earth by each man’s life choice; there is no decision or appeal made after death (Romans 2:6Romans 2:6

[God] “will render to each one according to his deeds”
    ; 2 Corinthians 5:10II Corinthians 5:10

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
    ; Hebrews 9:27Hebrew 9:27

...it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment
    ; Revelation 20:12Revelation 20:12

And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.
    )

Satan is a fallen angel (Revelation 12:7-9Revelation 12:7-9

And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
). Demons are also referred to in Scripture as principalities and powers (Ephesians 6:12Ephesians 6:12

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
; Colossians 2:15Colossians 2:15

Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
; Romans 8:38-39Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
) and are described as evil, powerful, numerous, unclean, and under Satan’s dominion (Luke 10:17-18Luke 10:17-18

Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
; Luke 8:29Luke 8:29

For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.
; Mark 5:8-9Mark 5:8-9

For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” 9 Then He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.”
; Matthew 10:1Matthew 10:1

And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.
; Matthew 12:24-30Matthew 12:24-30

Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.” 25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. 30 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.
).

  • Demons have the ability to recognize Christ, to instigate deceit, to possess human beings, to overcome men, to know their own destiny (Mark 1:23-24Mark 1:23-24

Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
    ; 1 Timothy 4:1I Timothy 4:1

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,
    ; Matthew 8:28-29Matthew 8:28-29

When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”
    ; Acts 19:13-16Acts 19:13-16

Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
    ; Matthew 8:29-33Matthew 8:29-33

And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?” 30 Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine feeding. 31 So the demons begged Him, saying, “If You cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of swine.” 32 And He said to them, “Go.” So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and perished in the water. 33 Then those who kept them fled; and they went away into the city and told everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.
    ).
The Lord brings deliverance from the power of Satan (Matthew 28:18Matthew 28:18

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
    ; Mark 16:17Mark 16:17

And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues
    ; Luke 4:18, 21Luke 4:18, 21

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
    ).
  • Believers are admonished to be aware of demons and of their work but not to be overly preoccupied with them (I Peter 5:8I Peter 5:8

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
    ; Luke 10:17-20Luke 10:17-20

Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
    ).
  • It is our duty to resist and overcome demonic powers in the Name of the Lord Jesus (I Peter 5:9I Peter 5:9

Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
    ; James 4:7James 4:7

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
    ).
