Salvation

*Click on the references to read the Scripture passages.*

We believe that man’s only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. Being justified by grace through faith, man becomes an heir of God according to the hope of eternal life (Luke 24:47Luke 24:47

and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
; John 3:3John 3:3

Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
; Romans 10:13-15Romans 10:13-15

13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!”
; Ephesians 2:8-9Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
).

God created mankind as an expression of His will and for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11Revelation 4:11

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created (KJV)
) and His creation was very good (Genesis 1:27,31Genesis 1:27, 31

27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
). Sin entered when man disobeyed God’s expressed will (Genesis 3:11Genesis 3:11

And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”
). The entrance of sin marred a creation that was good and separated it from God (Isaiah 59:2Isaiah 59:2

But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
), and brought troubles in life and eventual physical death (Genesis 3:17-19,23-24Genesis 3:17-19, 23-24

17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. 18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
; Romans 5:12Romans 5:12

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
). God, in His love for us, took the initiative to reconcile us to Himself and to restore eternal life to us (Romans 5:6-10Romans 5:6-10

6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
; Ephesians 2:4-5Ephesians 2:4-5

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
2 Corinthians 5:21II Corinthians 5:21

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
) through our salvation – which is deliverance from, and victory over, sin (Romans 6:6,14Romans 6:6, 14

6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
; I John 3:5-6,9I John 3:5-6, 9

5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
; I John 5:4,18I John 5:4, 18

4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.
).

  • Receiving salvation involves our personally believing the gospel, or “Good News” – which is the message of the death of Jesus Christ as punishment for our sins, HIs resurrection from the dead, and salvation through no one else but Him – and confessing Him as our own Lord and Savior (I Corinthians 15:1-4I Corinthians 15:1-4

1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
    ; Romans 3:23Romans 3:23

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
    , 5:6-8Romans 5:6-8

6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
    , 6:23Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
    , 10:9-10Romans 10:9-10

9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
    ; Acts 4:12Acts 4:12

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
    ).
  • Salvation is purely a matter of faith (belief) in the Lord Jesus Christ, and only in Him: we cannot save ourselves by any of our own efforts nor by any other means (Ephesians 2:8-9Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
    ; Acts 4:12Acts 4:12

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
    ; I Timothy 2:5I Timothy 2:5

For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
    ; John 14:6John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
    ).
  • Salvation first requires acknowledging that we have a personal need for forgiveness of sin (Romans 3:23Romans 3:23 (The Living Bible)

Yes, all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious ideal
    (TLB); Romans 3:10-12Romans 3:10-12

10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”
    ; Isaiah 64:6aIsaiah 64:6a

    But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags;
). We cannot walk in relationship with God until we are first reconciled to Him (Romans 5:6-10Romans 5:6-10

10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
    ; Colossians 2:13Colossians 2:13

And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,
    ).
  • Salvation occurs by a miracle of God in one’s heart and results in a changed life (Ezekiel 36:25-27Ezekiel 36:25-27

25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
    ; 2 Corinthians 5:17II Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
    ; Galatians 2:20Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
) that involves being “born again” into God’s family as dear sons and daughters (John 1:12-13John 1:12-13

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
    ; John 3:5-7John 3:5-7

5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
    ; I John 5:11 John 5:1

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.
    ; I Peter 1:23I Peter 1:23

having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever
    ; Ephesians 2:19Ephesians 2:19

19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
) and living in righteous obedience to God (I John 3:5-6,9I John 3:5-6, 9

5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
    ; I John 5:4,18I John 5:4, 18

4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.
    ).
  • Our eternal life begins here on earth when we put our faith in Christ (John 3:36aJohn 3:36a

He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life
    ; I John 3:2I John 3:2

Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
    ; 1 John 5:11-13I John 5:11-13

11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
), but our salvation will be fully realized after we have endured till the end (Matthew 24:13Matthew 24:13

But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
    ; James 1:12James 1:12

Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
    ; I Peter 1:3-5I Peter 1:3-5

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
    ; John 14:1-3John 14:1-3

Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
